I don't know what to say!!

Today, I made my second, well actually third trip to the Social Security Office and this is what I was told:

We cannot issue you a Social Security Card at this time because:

The Department of Homeland Security is unable to verify the immigrant document you submitted as evidence of your lawful alien status.  You should contact that agency to clarify your current immigration status.

Ok, they were called and still nothing.  Now a formal "investigation" is going to take place, which could take 6-12 weeks!!  Really???????  How can they not be able to verify the document they sent me???  You would think that this would be the easy part.  I mean, I spent a lot of money getting FBI fingerprints and waiting on immigration approval, before I even left for China to pick Clara up.

I just don't know what to think about all of this.  At the present time, I am unable to even enroll Clara in school, because she doesn't have a USA birth certificate or SS number.  I was having trouble deciding if I was going to enroll her in school or not and now the decision has been made for me.  I was going to have her get her therapies at the school, but now we are going to go private.  I am hoping getting her state issued birth certificate will be easier.   Only time will tell.

  1. I think I'd be going up the ladder, starting with the supervisor of whoever signed the letter. I mean if the issue is the veracity of a document they sent you, it sounds to me like someone up high needs to be informed of the total lack of quality control in their department.

  2. Hi Suzanne,

Sorry about your troubles with the paperwork. Despite the lack of a birth certificate or SS number at the moment you can still enroll Clara in school. If the school is unfamiliar with the law that supports this just take a copy of the Plyer vs. Doe decision.

    Good luck

  3. Came over from Robin's blog. You may want to try your senator's or congress person's office. Our congress woman helped us before we left for China. We had been "fighting" with HS for weeks and she had the matter resolved in one day.
